Resident & Family Reviews
Mr Lam Kai-On
Son of a resident, Wan Chai
"My mother had been reluctant to join anything for months after my father passed. A colleague mentioned Sung Hok and we came for a look expecting nothing in particular. She started with the Companion Circles and within six weeks she had regulars she looked forward to seeing. I cannot explain exactly what the team does differently, but something clearly works."

Ms Chan Wai-Ling
Resident, Companion Circles
"The mahjong on Wednesday afternoons is my favourite part of the week now. It took a few sessions before I really relaxed into it — new places take time — but Mrs Lau remembered how I take my tea from the second visit, and small things like that settle you. I would say it is good value for the company alone."

Mrs Tong Pui-Shan
Daughter of full-plan resident, Sai Kung
"We moved my father into the Residence Plan in February. He had been managing at home but the cooking and cleaning had become more than he wanted to deal with. Sung Hok has given him back his energy for the things he actually enjoys. He now attends the calligraphy sessions and the opera afternoons, neither of which he had done for years. The staff know him well already."

Mr Ng Gor-Fai
Resident, Cultural Studio
"The Cantonese opera sessions surprised me. I expected a quick recording and that would be it, but Tsz-Kwan always explains the background first and then we discuss it afterwards. I have learnt a great deal about recordings I have owned for thirty years without ever truly understanding. That kind of depth is rare to find."

Ms Wong Mei-Kuen
Niece of resident, North Point
"I was hesitant about placing my aunt anywhere — she is a private person and does not warm to new situations easily. The staff at Sung Hok were patient from the very first meeting and never pushed. She has settled more than I expected. The pricing is clear and the location is lovely. My only small note is that the car park can get busy at weekends."

Mr Ho Yiu-Tung
Resident, full Residence Plan
"I retired early and lived alone for seven years before coming here. I cooked, I read, I managed fine — but it was quiet in a way that got heavier over time. The dining room at Sung Hok sounds like a dining room should. The food is good and the company at breakfast makes the day feel like it has properly started."

Resident Journeys
How It Often Unfolds
These are typical patterns we see, drawn from the experiences of residents who have given us permission to share their stories in general terms.
From Reluctance to Routine
Companion Circles — 4 months
The Situation
A widow in her mid-seventies, living alone in Causeway Bay after her children relocated abroad. She was socially isolated and found the days long. Her daughter had tried several community programmes that had not held her interest.
How Sung Hok Helped
She joined the Companion Circles on a trial basis, commuting to Repulse Bay twice a week. The small group format and the absence of any structured agenda suited her. She came in, drank tea, played a few hands of cards, and gradually began to stay longer.
After 4 Months
She attends four sessions weekly and has added the calligraphy workshop. She has made two close friendships and recently told her daughter the days feel short. She remains in her own home but regards the group as a fixture of her week.
"I did not expect to care about it at all. Now I mind very much if I miss a Wednesday." — Resident, age 74
A Practical Decision That Became Something More
Residence & Lifestyle Plan — 7 months
The Situation
A retired civil servant in his early eighties, managing well physically but finding household logistics increasingly tiring. Cooking for one felt wasteful. His son wanted something with staff present but not a nursing home.
How Sung Hok Helped
The Residence Plan removed the household burden entirely. Three meals a day in a proper dining room, housekeeping taken care of, laundry handled. Within weeks he had free energy to explore the Cultural Studio, which he had initially dismissed.
After 7 Months
He is now a regular at both the opera listening sessions and the calligraphy workshops, and leads the informal history discussions that have grown up around the opera afternoons. His son reports he looks better than he has in years.
"It started as a practical arrangement. It turned into the most interesting period of my retirement." — Resident, age 83
